Communication LAB for Nurses:  Speaking-Up

Most of us are familiar with the intellectual aspects and skills involved in assertive language yet opportunities for
guided practice are not always available.  Learning about “I-Statements” is one thing, but practicing them in the
clinical environment is another!  Join communication and conflict management specialist, Beth Boynton, RN, MS in
this simulation LAB as we review the basic components of speaking-up and discuss the barriers, challenges and gray
areas that nurses face in using assertive language.  We will combine role-playing, coaching, reflection and
discussion of prepared simulations.  Participants will have opportunities to offer real life scenarios for feedback, trial
and practice.  This course meets NHBN requirements for Continuing Competence:
3 Contact Hours.
Objectives:

•        Develop concrete skills to promote
assertiveness in nurse practice settings.
